How to Keep Yourself Safe While Welding

Welding is a rewarding practice which requires proper training and safety procedures to be followed in order to keep everyone safe. This process may also be referred to as "Oxy-welding and cutting" and as the name implies the machines employed in this process use oxygen and fuels in order to produce intense heat which is capable of cutting extremely hard metals. The main fuel used to power these machines is called "Acetylene".

Mapp Gas

When the main fuel (acetylene) is burned and mixed with oxygen it can produce extreme temperatures, they usually range between 3200 and 3500 Celsius which is the equivalent of 5800-6300 Fahrenheit; with such extreme temperatures it goes without saying that proper safety precautions must be taken in order to keep yourself and those surrounding you safe. Since the fuels used to weld are extremely flammable, they should be kept in rooms with controlled temperature and in some cases pressure.

Mapp Gas

Other fuels used to weld and cut metals are: gasoline, hydrogen, methylacetylene-propadiene or MAPP gas, propane and propylene. Depending on the type of job a different type of fuel must be used, for instance underwater welding has to be done using hydrogen as the main fuel since acetylene becomes very unstable at 33 feet.

Before welding you must always check the equipment for leaks or malfunctions, you should also wear protective goggles or special masks which will cover your eyes and prevent the intense radiation from causing them harm, special gloves and even still toe boots should be used while welding.

You must also learn to identify the functions of the welding machine as well as the types of torches used for different tasks, some of the torch types are:

Welding Torch: its function is to melt and weld metals, it has two pipes and no oxygen-blast trigger.

The Rose-bud Torch: this name was given to it because the end of the flame looks like a rose-bud, it is used to heat metals and reshape them instead of melting the substance or cutting it.

Injector Torch: these torches have a small head which injects oxygen and relies on the Venturi effect to drag fuel gas along with it.

Cutting Torch: has three pipes one of which carries oxygen which can be adjusted through the oxygen-blast trigger, the main purpose of this torch is to cut metals.

Different torch types must be used according to the task, however the safety procedures remain the same, so remember to wear protective equipment, use respirators to avoid inhaling hazardous fumes produced by chemical reactions of the fuel and the burning metal and run a thorough assessment about your surroundings and the risk of fire.

How to Make Lampwork Beads

Making lampwork beads is actually a form of 'glassblowing', though in this case there is no actual working of the glass by 'blowing'. As it is unlikely that you will have the tools to get started just lying around the garage, so here is a list of what you will need to acquire to get started:

Mapp Gas

* Torch and gas hoses
* Fuel tank(s) (either MAPP gas or propane/oxygen set- this choice will depend on your torch)
* Kiln or annealing oven
* Mandrels
* Bead release
* Glass rod
* Shaping tools (graphite and brass implements work best as they will not melt)
* Long nose pliers (for stringer work)

Mapp Gas

The process is simple in theory; one simply heats the glass rod at the edges of the torch flame, and slowly works towards the center of the flame until the glass is nearly molten and applies it to a mandrel (this is a long, steel rod) that has been treated with bead release (otherwise the bead would be permanently melted to the mandrel upon cooling). The mandrel is rotated to collect evenly distribute glass from the rod. When the desired size and colors are achieved, the beadmaker can add decorative elements through the addition of ground up glass or stringer (more on this later). When the bead is finished, it is allowed to cool to the point where it is no longer glowing, and placed in the kiln or annealing oven to cool very slowly. The annealing process is very important as it removes stresses that working molten glass causes in your beads. Skipping the annealing process will result in extremely fragile beads that break under the slightest pressure. Once the annealing process is finished, a simple cleaning of the beads will make them ready for artisan use.

Stringing- the process of creating glass strings by pulling molten glass with a pair of pliers to create a thin strand of glass.

Remember to be extremely careful throughout this whole process, as you will be working glass at extremely high temperatures, so be sure to use glass rods of adequate lengths- at least four inches between your hand and the heated end of the rod should keep you safe, though more length is always recommended. Also, keep in mind that hot glass looks like cold glass, so be mindful of where you place the glass rods you have been working.

Metal Casting Torches and Furnace Torches Described

Oxy-fuel cutting and oxy-fuel welding can be described as the processes of using oxygen and fuel gases to either cut or weld metals. There are some striking differences between these two processes. In the first process, a cutting torch is made use of for heating ferrous metal to a temperature of around 980 degree Celsius. An oxygen stream is being trained on a hot metal that combines with iron chemically which later flows from the kerfs, or cut in the form of slag of iron oxide. In the second process, a 'welding torch' is made use of for welding metals.

Mapp Gas

Torches that burn the inside fuel with air (atmosphere) cannot be termed as oxy-fuel torches. They stand out owing to the use of single tank. This is because oxy-fuel cutting/welding requires oxygen, fuel, and two tanks. It's not possible to melt some of the metals with single-tank torches. Hence, these torches can be used for brazing and soldering, but not for welding. A metal-cutting torch is better known as hot blue spanner, blue wrench, hot wrench, smoke wrench, and gas-axe.

Mapp Gas

Types of Torches: The torch can be defined as the part held and manipulated by the welder to get the weld made. It possesses a valve and connection for oxygen and the same things for fuel gas, a handle to obtain the grip, an integrating chamber (angularly set) where there occurs a mixing of oxygen and fuel gas, with a tip where formation of flame takes place. The fuel gases used along with oxygen include propylene, propane, hydrogen gas, MAPP gas, Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), and the most widely used is acetylene.

Injector Torch: It can be defined as an archetypal oxy-fuel torch, also known as an equal-pressure torch. It carries out the mixing of mere two gases. The injector torch operates in such a way that high pressure oxygen comes out of the tiny nozzle present in the torch head, and the fuel gas gets dragged towards it via the venturi effect.

Rose-bud Torch: The use of this torch is to carry out the heating of metals for straightening, bending, etc. It is generally used where a huge area requires heating. It produces a rose-bud shaped flame at the end, hence the name. This torch can carry out the function of heating small areas like rusted bolts and nuts as well. However, here, filler rod won't be used with torch.

Cutting Torch: The head of the cutting torch is used for cutting metal. Its identification details are as follows: The inside of the torch consists of a combination of oxygen and acetylene. It helps in producing flame of a high temperature. It consists of 3 pipes going to a nozzle at 90 degree. It also contains an oxygen-blast trigger which blasts away the material during its cutting by the way of providing oxygen.

Welding Torch: The welding torch consists of either 1 or 2 pipes running towards the nozzle without oxygen-blast trigger. As the name suggests, it performs the function of welding.

Welding With a Gas Torch

Two basic varieties of gas welding torches exist. The first type uses fuel and air in order to heat metals while the second makes use of fuel and pure oxygen to produce a flame which is so hot that it is able to weld hard metals. Many situations exist in which either variety of torches can be used. Similarities exist between the ways in which both types of torches are operated. However limitations also exist in relation to their interchangeability.

Mapp Gas

Propane torches used by plumbers are a prime example of Air-Fuel torches. The most obvious limiting factor is the heat (approximately 3500 degrees F.). Air is a mixture of 30% oxygen and 70% nitrogen and as a result, the large majority of the fuel expending during the burning process is used to heat the nitrogen and this does not serve to increase the energy of the flame. Regardless of this limitation, this type of torch is inexpensive to buy and can be used for a wide variety of purposes. Their low heat means that this type of torch is unsuitable for a large majority of welding operations. However they prove suitable for use in soldering and brazing or for home orientated projects. These torches can be used to repair air conditioning units and copper plumbing fixtures found in homes and workplaces. They are invaluable for projects which involve the bending and shaping of metal or lead work.

Mapp Gas

Oxygen and fuel torches are typically referred to on the basis of the kind of fuel that they use, oxy-mapp, oxy-propane and oxy-acetelene being good examples. When pure oxygen is thrown into the mix, the heat produced drastically increases. The heat produced ranges in temperature. Propane typically produces heat of 5000 degrees F. while mapp produces heat of 6200 degrees F. Acetelene produces heat of 6500 degrees F. but it is also the priciest. The drawback of these types of gas torch kits is that they are expensive. However, in the past few years many outstanding mini setups have become available at affordable prices. The variety of work able to be performed with the use of these torches increases with the price. Metals of increasing thickness and larger selections of materials can be welded with the more expensive models. Oxygen and fuel torches are advantageous as with a change of tip, they are able to perform cutting operations. Simple air and fuel setups are unable to do this.

Mapp Gas Torch - Usage

The industrial gas used for fueling torches is Mapp gas. The Dow Chemical Company developed this gas mixture. The gas serves as an alternative to acetylene. The storage of this gas is comparable to that of LPG and this makes it highly favorable with hobby welders. Mapp gas torches produce a flame of an extremely high temperature. This means that the gas is ideal for industrial metal-cutting operations. Torches which use Mapp are not recommended for use in the welding of steel as Mapp contains a large quantity of hydrogen and this may result in steel welds which are generally poor and brittle in quality.

Mapp Gas

A gas torch should always be used with the greatest of caution. When lighting a gas welding torch, extreme care should be taken. Gas torches should never be used without the correct equipment. The correct type of protective clothing should be worn. This includes a helmet and gloves. This type of gas is one of the safest gas mixtures for both recreational welders and hobbyists to use and store. However, it can also be used for high-volume cutting operations due to its high pressures.

Mapp Gas

Mapp gas, as has been stated, reaches high combustion temperatures. This makes it outstanding for heating, brazing and soldering. These high temperatures render this gas invaluable for a whole manner of projects involving welding and cutting. The correct type of setup will enable an individual to perform a wide variety of welding operations in their own homes.

The use of Mapp in cutting underwater has proved successful. However, the use of Mapp in cutting underwater has been largely succeeded by exothermic cutting which is both faster and safer than the use of Mapp. Mapp is not recommended for use in steel welding. As stated above, the explanation for this is that the gas mixture contains hydrogen in high concentration. It is perfect for use in the welding of aluminum, copper and stainless steel.

In both its liquid and gaseous forms, Mapp is completely colorless. When it is in use, Mapp gives off a smell akin to that of fish odor or garlic. Mapp gas also burns hotter than all the gases.

Oxy-Fuel Cutting Overview

In Oxy-fuel cutting fuel gases and oxygen are used to cut and weld metals. This type of cutting is also called gas welding or oxy welding. In this method of welding, the welder will use a welding torch that welds the metals.

Mapp Gas

Welding is created when two pieces of metal are put under extreme heat that presents a pool of molten metal that is shared between the two. This pool has other metal in it that is called "filler" metal and type of filler will depend on whatever material that is going to be welded.

Mapp Gas

When the welder is going to weld in Oxy-fuel welding, they use a welding torch. However, in Oxy-Fuel cutting, they use a cutting torch. This torch is used to heat the metal to a hotter temperature called a kindling temperature. This creates a stream of oxygen that is then placed on the metal and as the metal combines with the steam of oxygen it flows from the cut that was made and becomes an oxide slag. The cut is also called a kerf.

It is important to note in this discussion that some torches don't mix oxygen with fuel so they are not oxy-fuel torches. They will use atmospheric air instead. These use only a single tank torch and metals can't be melted with a single tank torch.

Oxy-fuel cutting has four requirements that are basic to doing it. These include:

· The temperature ignition of the material that is going to be cut has to be lower than the material's melting point. If not, it will melt before the welder is able to cut it and it will flow into the melting pool.
· The melting point of the oxide has to be lower than the material that surrounds it so that the oxygen jet can mechanically blow the oxide away.
· The reaction of the oxidation between the metal and the oxygen jet has to be strong enough to maintain the temperature ignition.
· There should be a small amount of gaseous reaction products so that these gases don't dilute the oxygen for cutting.

The oxygen stream's purity will determine the cutting speed and the edge of the cut's quality. This means that the way the nozzle is designed will play a role in the protection of the oxygen stream which is prone to air entrainment.

Also, the oxygen should be pure to 99.5% or higher. When the purity of the oxygen is lower, it will also lower the speed of cutting. As an example, a decrease of only 1% will cause the cutting speed to be lower by 25% and it also increases the consumption of gas by 25%.

Fuel gases that are most used in Oxy-fuel cutting are MAPP (methylacetylene-propadiene), natural gas, propylene, acetylene and propane. The way the gas that is chosen performs in cutting speed, pierce time and edge quality will depend on the way heat is distributed within the two flame cones (inner and outer) and the flame temperature. In this case, acetylene will be the hottest flame for this cutting process.
