Rather than running to your local hardware or home improvement store and just randomly add tools, let's take a step back for a second and define what tools are absolutely required.

No matter what type of plumbing you do you will need to have a basic set of tools to make it a reality. For this basic set let's assume that you have no reason to want to solder any pipes or similar. Just take care of the basic plumbing tasks that come up often anywhere running water is a reality. To that end, let's run through the basic things to add to your toolbox. Thankfully, many of these tools are likely part of your normal around the house toolbox. A pair of crescent wrenches is a good start. Some people prefer channel locks or similar, but I think that the crescent wrench allows adjusting and a solid back drop for screwing and unscrewing plumbing fixtures that have plenty of room around them. From here a pipe cutter is a staple of plumbing tool boxes around the world. A basin wrench is great for those hard to reach places that make it literally impossible to screw on and off plumbing fixtures with normal wrenches. A roll of Teflon tape is needed to ensure water tightness in some connection. A small hack saw is the final piece of the basic plumbing set that will get you through the majority of basic plumbing that will come your way.

Now, if you plan on being sweating and soldering pipe there will be a few other things that you need to ensure you are ready for your plumbing projects. A soldering kit is a necessity. Make sure that it has a torch of course (propane gas works fine, but MAPP gas will help a lot if you are willing to spend a few extra dollars). In addition it needs to have solder (silver colored roll stock) and flux (it will be in a container that looks like lip gloss). Not normally included in these soldering kits is some industrial sandpaper or similar to rough up the copper piping for sweating. An adjustable wrench is nice to have for holding loose copper pipe you are sweating, but is not an absolute must.
If you add the above list of tools to your arsenal, you should be ready to handle all the basic plumbing problems that come your way. I personally keep them in a separate tool box in my basement so that I can go and grab them all at once when I know I am going to be working on plumbing.

When the torch lights, gradually open the valve further until the flame becomes large enough to heat the area you will work on. Do not open the valve all the way: the flame will not get much larger and the gas pressure will probably blow it out.

Mapp Gas

It is necessary to hold the torch assembly upright while you are working. If the tank is tilted very much, the liquid inside will flow into the valve, blocking it so that the flame goes out.

The propane torch is easy and safe to use if it is handled properly. Caution is necessary, however, because the joints to be sweated with the flame are generally located near flammable parts of a house structure. It can't be stressed enough that you really need to be careful when using a torch, since it is one of the most dangerous tools you will ever use in plumbing projects.

Before starting to work, cover the area behind piping with squares of asbestos sheeting. And make a habit of shutting off the torch whenever you set it aside, even if only for a moment or two--the flame is silent, nearly invisible and easy to forget about.

Propane Gas Versus Mapp Gas - Which is the Most Suitable Gas Torch For You?

When you need to perform repairs to your household plumbing system, you will require a torch that enables you to solder copper tubing and fittings as well as piping. To use a gas torch you will inevitably require gas.

It is also a wise choice for repairing larger pipes. However, if you like to do repair jobs without professional help but are inexperienced at soldering then the higher temperature may present problems.

For a start, the flux of a plumbing joint can be burnt out if adequate care is not taken and if you are using the gas torch in a tight space then the extra heat may cause problems. This will mean that you will have to be wary of accidentally creating fires or burning things.

A further consideration relates to the affordability. Mapp gas is considerably more expensive than standard propane gas. This must be taken into consideration if you only intend on conducting a few repairs.

However, Mapp is favored over propane when you intend to work with pipes which may contain excess water. Mapp gas burns much hotter in comparison to propane and this makes it a great deal easier as it boils the water out much quicker.

Propane and Mapp gas not only have very different characteristics but their purposes differ too. Make your gas torch selection based upon the quantity of work required to be performed and also consider the dimensions of the material requiring repair.
